Dormouse Books is a Community Interest Company.
Being a CIC means that any ‘surplus’ we make (money above general running costs) is used for the community: running free literary events and gifting book vouchers to young people. CICs also have an ‘asset lock’, which means that if we build an empire to rival Amazon (or, more realistically, if we are eventually ‘worth’ more – financially – than we are now) the directors will only be able to recoup their original investment. Any surplus goes to an organisation with similar aims.
Why a CIC?
We don’t think ‘worth’ can or should be measured in profit. We pay our staff a living wage and get people in Belper reading books and talking about books.
How can you support us?
Buy your books from us! We stock a wide range of contemporary fiction, nonfiction, poetry and children’s books. We even have a really special spooky cellar. If we haven’t got what you’re looking for we can order most books in (contact us via the form below or phone the shop). If you live further afield then please consider buying from Bookshop.org (nominating us to receive part of the profit).
